A man serving time at Saskatchewan Penitentiary has died.

Joseph Vincent Manitopyes was found unresponsive in his cell at the Prince Albert prison’s medium security unit Tuesday. He was taken to Victoria Hospital but pronounced dead at about 10:30 p.m., according to Correctional Service Canada.

He was serving a five-year, seven-month sentence.

The 31-year-old was declared a long-term offender in June 2014 after he was convicted alongside another man in connection to a string of 2010 robberies in Regina.

Corrections will be reviewing Manitopyes’ death. The police and the coroner have been notified.
