The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is upset about recent federal budget cuts.

Interim Chief Morley Watson says the federal government has unexpectedly slashed funding to Aboriginal organizations across the country. For the 2014-15 fiscal year, he says funding to the FSIN has been cut from $1.6 million to $500,000.

Watson says the federal government is trying to mute the voices of Aboriginal people. He says with Saskatchewan’s economic success, now is the time to invest in First Nations people.

"With an aging workforce, with the emerging First Nations population, we think the time is great that there should be greater investment in First Nations people. We believe that slashing budgets isn't the way to provide that opportunity to build a better Saskatchewan."

At this time, the FSIN says it does not anticipate any staff cuts or reduction in services.
