A forest fire in the northern provincial forest has forced residents to evacuate their homes.

Firefighters are battling a large forest fire in the rural municipality of Torch River, about 100 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert, near the town of Love, Sask.

Smeaton RCMP and fire department were dispatched to the wild fire Friday afternoon.

As of Friday evening, about 225 hectares (over one square kilometre) of land were involved in the fire, according to RCMP.

RCMP said the flames were moving toward the northeast and an emergency operation centre had been established to co-ordinate efforts.

Residents in the area have been evacuated since Friday while Smeaton, Choiceland, Whitefox, Nipawin and provincial fire departments work to contain the fire.

Highway 35 north of the town of Love has been closed and residents are asked to avoid the area.

No injuries or property damage has been reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
