A late night rollover on Highway 5 left created a mystery for RCMP Wednesday night.

Shortly after midnight, officers rushed to the scene five kilometers east of Saskatoon, only to find a car accident without a victim. A search turned up nothing, so the RCMP turned to an unmanned aerial search.

Police received a call from the victim’s cell phone and were able to use its signal to narrow down the location and use the flying device to find him. Using heat registering video, RCMP were able to find the driver, who was only wearing a t-shirt and didn’t have shoes in the near-freezing temperatures.

“He was very cold and unresponsive when we found him last night. Probably in another couple of hours he would have succumbed to hypothermia for sure,” said RCMP Corporal Doug Green said.

The dragonfly was developed in Saskatoon, and this wasn’t the first time it’s been used to save lives down below, but the RCMP are looking to expand their use of the dragonfly.

“We’ve been looking at the ways that we can use it other aspects like search and rescue and identifying different things out in different scenes,” Green explained.
