Soggy fields are putting a damper on seeding plans of farmers across Saskatchewan.

In its first crop report for 2011, Saskatchewan Agriculture says most farmers are at least two weeks away from seeding. Excessive moisture and cool temperatures are keeping fields through much of the grain belt too wet for planting.

Some areas in the southwest, west-central and northwestern parts of the province have dried out enough to allow for harrowing, applying fertilizer and controlling weeds.

When farmers get onto fields will again depend on the weather in the next few days.

NDP leader Dwain Lingenfelter says he'll be calling for government aid for farmers, if they can't get onto the land.

"The ten million acres that weren't seeded last year, if it goes again without being seeded we will be calling on the federal, provincial governments to get a payment out to farmers, who are unable to seed their land. But at this point in time we're still hopeful and praying that we're going to get the crop in a timely fashion."
