RCMP are investigating after a suspected impaired driver crashed a truck into a small wooden bridge in rural west-central Saskatchewan.

Mounties say employees with the Rural Municipality of Britannia discovered the damaged bridge Thursday on Township Road 510, just off Highway 17. A smashed pickup truck was abandoned at the scene and a railing on one side of the bridge was completely taken out, with pieces of the structure sitting on the frozen water below.

According to police, the truck hit the railing before travelling back across the road and down an embankment. The vehicle then went through a farmer’s fence, made its way up an approach and came to a stop on the road.

The driver fled the scene, RCMP say. Empty liquor bottles were left inside the truck, leading investigators to suspect impaired driving.

No one has been arrested, according to Mounties. Charges may be laid in the case, but impaired driving charges are unlikely because the driver fled and no witnesses have come forward.

Police are not sure the cost of the damage.

The RM of Britannia is located in west-central Saskatchewan, near Lloydminster.
