A dog left in a home’s backyard is safe after a house fire on Saskatoon’s Idylwyld Drive Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the blaze, at 1127 Idylwyld Drive North, at about noon. The caller told 911 he saw smoke coming from the home and that a large dog was in the backyard. He said no one answered when he knocked on the door.

Fire crews arrived within three minutes and found smoke and flames coming from the house’s roof and northwest window, the fire department said in a media release. The blaze was under control in about 20 minutes.

Crews found no one in the house after searching the residence and the dog was safely placed in a kennel in the backyard.

The fire department said flames started in the home’s bathroom/laundry room. A fire investigator is still working to determine the cause.

Damage is estimated at $70,000.
