Joe Hordyski

Saskatchewan Party – Joe Hordyski

Joe Hordyski moved to La Ronge nearly 25 years ago to build a house. Some 50 houses later and after serving four terms as mayor of La Ronge, Joe is the Saskatchewan Party candidate in the Cumberland constituency for the 2011 provincial election. Joe was nominated as the candidate in September 2010.

Born in Prince Albert, Joe was one of eleven children raised on a family farm northeast of Prince Albert in the community of Honeymoon. Joe grew up competing in several sports: hockey, soccer, and wrestling which allowed him to travel across Canada. He now enjoys golfing, fishing and watching hockey and football.

Joe became a journeyman carpenter in 1983 and has been self-employed as a building contractor in La Ronge since 1988. Prior to moving to La Ronge, he worked as a correctional officer for Corrections Canada for five years. He also spent four years working on his family's dairy farm.

Community involvement is an important part of Joe's life. He spent 18 years on La Ronge town council (12 as mayor) and most recently sat on the board of the Mamweetin Churchill health region. He has also been involved with the SaskWater board, the Elks Club, and a variety of other local boards including La Ronge regional waste management, fire, water, parks and recreation and the library.

Joe and his wife Linda have four grown children who live in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Doyle Vermette

NDP – Doyle Vermette

Of Métis ancestry, Doyle Vermette was born and raised in Prince Albert. He made the La Ronge area his permanent home in 1990.

Doyle and his wife Sandra have a blended family and their children were raised in La Ronge, where their family is concentrated. In his early years, he worked in the family's forest industry company, based in Spruce Home, as well as in the service industry in the La Ronge area.

In addition to being active in community service clubs, in the La Ronge Elks, and in the Parent Council of the Gordon Denny Community School since 1996, Doyle has a lengthy record of public activity.

He was a member of the Board of Education, Northern Lights School Division/Nortep-Norpac for eight years, serving as Board Chair for two years.

From 2004 until early 2008, Doyle was the acting chair of the Gabriel Dumont Institute. As an alderman for Air Ronge from 1994 to 1997, Doyle had a particular passion for expanding recreation and youth programs.

Currently he is on the board of the Kikinahk Friendship Centre in La Ronge, a board on which he has served for many years.

Over an 18-year period, he served on the boards of the Keewatin Career Development Corporation, the Saskatchewan Water Corporation, and the Jim Brady Métis Local #19.

While serving on these boards, Doyle completed numerous governance and leadership courses.

He is proud of the experience and education he has gained working with and representing the people of the North.

Doyle was elected MLA for the Cumberland constituency in June 2008.
