City of Saskatoon officials are looking to speed up repairs on the slumping Saskatchewan Crescent.

A piece of road, where the crescent meets 16th Street, has collapsed nearly three metres in the last two weeks.

Mayor Don Atchison said last week rebuilding work would likely begin in the late summer or early fall, but officials now say they’re expediting the tender and design process in order to speed up repairs.

“Everybody knows the urgency of this,” said city transportation and utilities manager Jeff Jorgenson. “We hope it’s sooner than fall.”

Still, quality is a top priority, he said.

“These repairs are very expensive — in the millions of dollars. We want to fix this in a way that we don’t have to go back in there again. So, although we do feel some pressure to get it done quickly, at the same time, we would far prefer to get it done properly,” Jorgenson said.

Homes in the area are not at risk, according to the city.
