Are residential neighbourhoods being built too close to major highways?

That's just one of many questions being asked following Wednesday's devastating crash in Stonebridge.

Police have still not confirmed that it was the semi driver whose remains were found in the rubble. And they don't know why the vehicle he was driving left the highway.

The truck was travelling south on Circle Drive around 3:00 a.m. Just after going under the Highway #16 overpass, the semi veered off the road, going over the southbound off-ramp and over a sound berm before entering the Stonebridge area and crashing into a house under construction on Senick Bay, setting off a massive blaze.

What more can be done to protect people inside their homes, when they happen to live near a busy highway? Heavy trucks speed by at all hours of the day, but according to Mike Gutek, the general manager of city infrastructure, the Stonebridge neighbourhood is already a safe distance from the road.

"The distance from the roadway to the houses ia an adequate distance," says Gutek.

Meanwhile, people living in Stonebridge, like Blair Piso of the Stonebridge Community Association, say they believe their community is safe.

"Is out community safe? Yeah. I haven't heard of anybody reconsidering living in this immediate area."
