It was a long time coming, but two new schools in Saskatoon hosted their official grand openings Tuesday.

Students, staff, parents and officials gathered at Willowgrove and Holy Family schools to celebrate their openings.

The schools were set to open last September, but their doors remain closed until March — when classes finally began — because of construction delays.

The schools include space for up to 1,100 elementary students, a childcare facility and multi-purpose space for the community.

“It is absolutely outstanding. We are so excited to be able to offer programming to our community and to have a central focus point for our community that involved preschools, daycares, elementary schools — basically just a spot where we can gather as a community,” said Glena Clezy, president of the Willowgrove University Heights Community Association.

The provincial government committed more than $38 million to the project.
