The province is promising flexibility with businesses hit by flooding when it comes to filing sales taxes.
Depending on the amount of taxes collected, Saskatchewan businesses file tax returns either monthly, quarterly, or on an annual basis – but the government announced Wednesday that if a business was affected by flooding, they can file for a special exemption that would have the penalty and interest charges waived.
“We are taking into account the unusual circumstances and potential for flooding that may impact businesses in our province this spring,” Finance Minister Ken Krawetz said in a press release. “As we have in the past, we’re adopting a flexible approach and dealing in a fair way with businesses which could be affected by natural disasters, like flooding.”
The written request must include the location of the business, and details about the how the flooding prevented them from filing their returns on time.
