Police officers in Saskatoon will soon be armed with Tasers.
The purchase of 44 of the weapons was approved Thursday by the city’s board of police commissioners.
Tasers will be issued to front-line officers beginning early next year, but before officers can use the weapons they must complete 11 hours of online and classroom training.
Police chief Clive Weighill says officers will be trained on how to keep volatile situations from escalating to the point where a Taser has to be used.
The reporting and review process after a Taser is used by an officer is similar to situations in which an officer has discharged a gun, Weighill said.
