Saskatchewan’s population hit an all-time high last year, according to new figures from Statistics Canada.

The province grew by just over 20,000 people in 2013 to reach a total of 1,117,503.

The growth rate of 1.83 per cent was the second highest among all provinces, behind only Alberta.

Saskatchewan and Alberta were the only two provinces to see more people moving in than moving out.

Over half of Saskatchewan’s new residents immigrated to the province from outside Canada while just over 1,000 people moved from other provinces. The remainder of the population jump, about a 5,500 increase, can be attributed to a natural increase, which measures the number of births against the number of deaths.
