The victim in a high-profile Prince Albert assault has personally requested a court ordered publication ban on her identity be lifted.

Marlene Bird, 47, was found badly beaten and burned in the city’s downtown June 1. She was the victim of an assault, found suffering severe facial lacerations and burns to the lower half of her body. She was taken to hospital in Edmonton, where both of her legs have since been amputated due to the burns.

She asked the publication ban be removed because she does not want to be “faceless, nameless” and “just another statistic.”

Bird’s family presented the request in Prince Albert provincial court Tuesday on behalf of her as she is still recovering in hospital in Edmonton.

The publication ban was put in place July 2, days after the arrest of 29-year-old Leslie Black, and was issued due to the nature of the charges.

Black faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault in relation to the incident.

He is due back in court July 6.
