A man guilty in a fatal stabbing at the Northwoods Inn has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.

Alvin Patrick Junior Naistus, 26, was handed the sentence Wednesday morning in Saskatoon’s Court of Queen’s Bench. The sentence was what the defence requested. The Crown asked for life in prison with no parole eligibility for 14 years.

A jury found Naistus guilty of second-degree murder last week in the death of William “Billy” Johnston.

Johnston, who was 44, was killed April 18, 2015. He was stabbed in the Northwoods parking lot in Saskatoon.

Naistus’ defence lawyer claimed Naistus was defending himself, but the Crown argued the incident was not a case of self-defence.

The court saw video during the trial and heard from people who witnessed the murder. One woman who testified took cellphone video of an altercation.

A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for a minimum of 10 years.
