A man who pleaded guilty in the death of a Saskatchewan conservation officer was sentenced Friday to 9 1/2 years in prison and banned from driving for 20 years.

With credit for time already spent in custody, Blaine Taypotat will serve 6 1/2 years behind bars.

Taypotat had earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter and impaired driving in the 2013 death of Justin Knackstedt.

The court heard Taypotat was drunk and speeding on Highway 11 between Regina and Saskatoon when he was pulled over.

He sped off and ran over Knackstedt, who was helping direct traffic at a crash scene.

The judge said while Taypotat showed remorse, he had a blood alcohol level that was three times the legal limit; that he fled after hitting Knackstedt, and that he was banned from driving at the time.
