A Saskatoon man faces weapons-related charges after an 11-year-old boy took a .45-calibre handgun to school to show his friends.

The gun went off in a locker at the back of a classroom at Saint Peter Catholic Elementary school last month.

No one was hurt and staff immediately took the gun away.

Investigating officers seized several long guns and another handgun in the boy's home.

No charges can be laid against the child because of his age.

Police say a 43-year-old man has been charged with careless storage of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device and possession of a firearm without a licence.

He is to appear in Saskatoon provincial court on Feb. 27.
