The Saskatoon Fire Department took on a different type of rescue on Saturday afternoon, helping an injured pelican get to safety.

The fire department says a passerby noticed the injured bird near the island just south of the weir. The pelican had an injured wing and its survival was in jeopardy. The Water Rescue Team and a staff member from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan travelled out to the bird in a boat. The crew was able to capture the bird using a net and brought the bird back to shore safely.

The Rehabilitation Society hopes to return the bird to the river soon.
