Hundreds gathered in Nipawin Wednesday to say farwell to fallen RCMP officer Derek Pineo. Cst. Pineo died last week when his cruiser hit a moose near the town of Wilkie.
Assistant Commissioner Russ Mirasty says Pineo was a joy to be around. “He was one of those individuals who lit up a room when he entered. He adjusted so well to his role as an RCMP member here in Saskatchewan even though he was from Nova Scotia. A terrific person.”
Pineo leaves behind a wife and three young children. In a statement, the family said that “Derek was a family man, community minded, who lived his life to the fullest and gave 110 per cent in whatever he participated in. His passion for the job was addictive to those who served with him. The impact Derek has made with his short time with the RCMP is only a small reflection of his passion to serve others. His life is a true example of his desire ‘to serve and protect’.”
While it’s always tough to say goodbye to a loved one, those that knew Pineo say he lived his life to the fullest. He was 38 years old.
