A movement to recognize the importance of honeybees continues to gain momentum across Canada.

This Sunday, May 29, has been proclaimed the Day of the Honey Bee by 156 municipalities across the country. It's the second year for the campaign, which highlights the vital role honeybees play in the production of food.

Organizers also want to raise awareness on the mysterious die-off of honey bee populations, in many parts of the world. Experts believe the bees may be dying from a combination of pesticides, parasites, and pathogens.

Clinton Ekdahl, the founder of the Day of the Honey Bee says the world can't survive without bees. "Considering they are responsible for a little over 70 per cent of the food crop pollination, that's very, very important. And it can equate to about $2 billion a year annually in Canada alone. And globally it's just a phenomenal thing to think of. And if they continue to die at the rate that they are, it concerns me."
