A report of gunshots early Tuesday led Saskatoon police to the discovery of a female body in the 100 block of 25th Street West.

Police say the shots were heard shortly after midnight and a search of the area discovered the female victim dead outside of a building at 25th Street West and Idylwyld Drive. The death is the city's third homicide of 2014.

Major crimes and forensic investigators were on the scene Tuesday morning and the emergency response team was also involved as a safety precaution, police said in a news release.

Officers also deployed the police robot at the scene as part of the investigation.

A resident of an apartment building at the scene told CTV he was frisked by police officers as he left the building.

There is no word of an arrest and the identity of the female has not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The 100 block of 25th Street was closed to traffic as officers investigated.
