Members of the Saskatoon Fire Department are pulling together to help the children of a firefighter who died of cancer.

A trust fund for Darren Grindheim’s 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter is being set up and his former colleagues are raising money for the fund through a Go Fund Me page.

The dispatcher with the Saskatoon department and volunteer fire chief in Hanley died of cancer on Tuesday at the age of 38. His children lost their mother several years ago.

Grindheim’s former co-workers say he was a huge sports enthusiast and passionate volunteer. The Saskatoon Fire Department will hold a full honour guard service Saturday in Hanley to remember him.

The Go Fund Me page has raised over $10,000 since Tuesday.
