Saskatoon Light and Power has pinpointed the source of Sunday’s power outage.

A mechanical failure is to blame for the five-hour blackout in three east-side Saskatoon neighbourhoods.

Saskatoon Light and Power said a mechanical device called a tap changer was the culprit. The device is meant to keep voltage at a consistent level — when voltage rises, a computer attached to the device cuts off power — but it failed to do so.

The issue has been resolved and Saskatoon Light and Power said the tap changer will soon be replaced.
