CTV alumni and brother of Jeff, Mark Rogstad returns to his old stomping ground to cook up some quick and tasty desserts. Courtesy of his mother-in-law, Mark shared his recipe for Chocolate Haystacks with us.

These simple and delicious desserts might go by many names – haystacks, filled fudge, oat bites – but one thing is certain: they're delicious.

To make these bites, you'll need:

  • 2 cups of white sugar
  • ½ cup of milk
  • 3 heaping tablespoons of cocoa
  • ½ cup of margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups quick rolled oats
  1. In a medium pot, put the milk, sugar, and cocoa powder on medium-high heat until a rolling boil is achieved for about a minute, then remove from heat. Keep stirring so you don't burn the milk!
  2. Add in the margarine and vanilla, stir. Bring the mixture to a boil again, then remove from heat and stir in the oats. Stir the mixture so the oats are well coated.
  3. Using two spoons, pick up a small portion of the mixture and roll into a ball, then drop onto a piece of wax paper. Pop in the freezer to harden, then enjoy!

Mark says they can be eaten cooled, or spoon the warm mixture over ice cream for a twice-as-nice treat.
