“I just don’t know where to go,” said Keatin, a 15-year-old student driver, while behind the wheel.

The problem is there are no lines marking the lanes on many of Saskatoon’s streets.

“It’s super frustrating because I’m not familiar with the roads and I can’t see where the lanes are or how many there are,” Keatin said.

According to Zaigham Kayani, the lack of lane markings is a bigger problem than meets the eye. Kayani owns a private driving school, and he said it’s not just new drivers struggling with where they belong on the road.

“I’ve seen expert drivers struggling with establishing and maintaining their own lane and they’re wandering from one lane to another and it’s very frustrating,” he said.

According to the city, a lack of lines isn’t unusual after winter. “It may be a little bit worse, but it’s not uncommon come spring once the snow melts to have minimal visibility on the lines,” said Angela Gardener from the city’s transportation branch.

Until the lanes are re-painted, young drivers like Keatin and even those with more experience, are left driving between imaginary lines.
