The University Bridge is expected to open to traffic two to three weeks early.

The City of Saskatoon said Thursday that, thanks to dry weather and no major construction issues so far, repairs to the iconic 100-year-old structure are near completion.

“Currently the concrete on the north side of the bridge is curing,” said Rob Frank, the city’s asset preservation manager, in a media release. “The contractor still needs to complete some grinding and smoothing work, approach paving, crack filling, expansion joint gland installation, pedestrian hand rail installations and site cleanup – as soon this work is completed we can open the bridge.”

The bridge, which shut down to most traffic in early May, was initially scheduled to remain closed until the end of August. The city now expects the bridge to open within the next few weeks.
