The Saskatoon Fire Department battled an afternoon blaze at a house in the 2300 block of Ewart Avenue on Friday.

Around noon, the fire department received a call of smoke coming from the home. Three engine companies, an aerial apparatus and a medium rescue truck all responded. Upon arrival, crews saw smoke coming from the chimney and back of the house. Firefighters began an aggressive interior fire attack and conducted a search for any people. They discovered a fire in the basement that had extended into the back of the house and up into the attic.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to control the fire. There was no one in the home at the time of the fire and no one was injured. However, two pet dogs died in the fire.

According to investigators, the fire began in a basement bedroom and caused approximately $240,000.00 worth of damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
