Police have arrested a Saskatoon man after a 911 call led officers to remove children and a woman from a McCormack Road home and prompted an hours-long standoff.

The 29-year-old was taken into custody after police entered the house at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday. He and officers with the police’s tactical unit and crisis teams had been involved in a standoff since the early morning.

Police were first sent to the home on the 700 block of McCormack Road following a 5:30 a.m. 911 call. The emergency operator heard what sounded like a fight during the call.

“The 911 operator reported that she wasn’t able to actually converse with anyone, but she could hear screaming and what sounded like a fight going on, so patrol officers responded,” Staff Sgt. Grant Obst said.

Responding officers were met by a man when they arrived at the house. He was acting erratically and made verbal threats toward the officers, according to police.

A 27-year-old woman and four children were inside the home and were removed by police, but the man continued to make threats and alluded to the use of a gun.

“They were able to get the woman and the children out of the house, but the male party had made comments with respect to threats and the use of firearms,” Obst said.

The woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries and heavily armed police surrounded the house.

The tactical unit’s armoured BearCat vehicle and the Saskatoon Fire Department’s mobile command bus were sent to the scene.

The suspect refused to come out of the house and was arrested after police entered the home. No gun was found.

Police said he was taken to hospital to be checked over.

He’s facing charges of domestic assault, uttering threats and breaching a conditional sentencing order. He was scheduled to see a justice of the peace later Saturday.

The 700 block of McCormack Road, which was closed to traffic during the incident, has since been re-opened.
