Saskatoon police laid about 70 charges early Wednesday morning after four people attempted to flee police in a stolen vehicle.

A patrol officer spotted a suspicious SUV being driven dangerously in the city’s southeast area around 2 a.m. The officer followed the vehicle and called for backup, according to police.

Officers, including canine units, soon located the vehicle, abandoned and running, in an alley in the 2200 block of Broadway Avenue.

Several stolen firearms were inside the SUV and the group of suspects — two men, 23 and 29, and a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl —were arrested nearby. Police said the 23-year-old was found hiding under a deck. He was treated for injuries consistent with dog bites, police said, and charged with assaulting an officer after he punched an officer in the face.

The four are scheduled to appear before a Justice of the Peace Wednesday evening. Charges include possessing stolen property, dangerously operating a vehicle, evading police, firearm violations and breach of undertaking.
