A Humboldt, Sask., photographer’s shot of young powwow dancers has beat out more than 900 other photos to be featured in an upcoming exhibit at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Melanie Gray’s photo of dancers at a powwow on the Rama First Nation in Ontario, titled The Next Generation, will be joining 69 other photographs for the Points of View exhibit. The photo was taken two years ago.

“For many years, our people were restricted from gathering for pow wows,” Gray’s photo caption reads. “Now we are proud to host this celebration of culture and heritage every year. This is not just for First Nations – we welcome everyone. It is beautiful to see people coming together.”

More than 980 photos were submitted, according to a media release from the human rights museum. A jury of five people with backgrounds in photography, literature, law, journalism and human rights selected the Point of View exhibit’s 70 photographs.

The exhibit — marking Canada’s 150th anniversary — opens one week before Canada Day.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is located in Winnipeg.
