Aerial footage showing Saskatoon police rescuing five people from an armed standoff last week was released to the public Thursday.

The five people were hiding behind a parked vehicle after escaping from a home on the 300 block of Coppermine Crescent. A man armed with a rifle and barricaded inside the house was firing gun shots, forcing the group to take cover until police arrived.

Footage from the Saskatoon police Air Support Unit shows officers using an armoured vehicle to rescue the group.

Several police cruisers and heavily armed officers were called to the home around 7 p.m. Aug. 22.

A man reportedly assaulted a woman in the house. She was able to escape and hide, alongside a few others, behind the vehicle, but was shot at as she left the house, police said.

The standoff lasted three hours before the suspect walked out of the home and was arrested. Footage of the arrest was also captured on video.

The armoured vehicle was hit with gun shots during the incident, police said. No shots were fired by officers. The woman who escaped the home was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

A 37-year-old man is charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a weapon, and one count each of assaulting a police officer, using a firearm in the commission of a criminal offence, pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm in relation to the standoff.
