Gun shots rang out from a home in Saskatoon’s River Heights neighbourhood Friday night.

A man armed with a rifle and barricaded inside a home on the 300 block of Coppermine Crescent fired at least one shot at a woman as she escaped the house and a number of shots at officers who responded to the call, police said Saturday.

Several police cruisers and heavily armed officers were called to the home around 7 p.m.

A man reportedly assaulted a woman in the home. She was able to escape and hide, alongside four other people who also fled the house, behind a parked vehicle before police arrived.

She was shot at as she escaped and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries upon police arrival.

Crisis negotiators, an Explosives Disposal Unit robot and an armoured rescue vehicle were also called to the scene.

The armoured vehicle, which police said was hit with gun shots during the incident, was used to rescue the five people hiding behind the parked car.

No shots were fired by police.

The standoff concluded around 10 p.m. when the suspect walked out of the house and was arrested. He was not carrying a weapon when he left the home, police said.

A 37-year-old man is charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a weapon, and one count each of assaulting a police officer, using a firearm in the commission of a criminal offence, pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm in relation to the incident.
