Saskatoon is right in the thick of the flu season.

The city’s health region says cases of influenza have been reaching their highest numbers of the season over the last two weeks and is warning, while the city might be nearing the end of peak flu time, the influenza season is far from over.

“We anticipate to see local activity of influenza in the next few weeks, and that’s an important message for the public to understand the influenza season is not over,” said Dr. Simon Kapaj, Saskatoon Health Region's deputy medical health officer.

Nearly 289 cases of influenza have so far been confirmed in Saskatoon this season, while Prince Albert has seen 26 cases. The province has so far totalled 380 cases.

About 56,000 people in Saskatoon have so far received vaccinations, while the Parkland Health Region says 13,000 have received the shot in Prince Albert. Neither of those numbers includes doses administered by pharmacists.

Flu season typically lasts from the end of October to the end of March. The numbers of cases and vaccinations are so far on average, according to the Saskatoon Health Region.
