Crews are still working to cap a well at a natural gas pumping station near Prud’homme in an effort to extinguish a fire that has been burning for almost a week.

TransGas spokesperson Dave Burdeniuk said crews will be working through Friday night to install a new wellhead to seal the cavern.

A crane will lower the wellhead into place before workers use high-pressure water to extinguish the fire and install the wellhead, he said.

“If it’s required, there may be a temporary re-ignition of the gas, so people may see the flame reappear,” Burdeniuk wrote in an email, “but that would be a planned process.”

The final step will sealing the cavern.

The fire started Saturday after an explosion at the facility northeast of Saskatoon. The flames are said to be still reaching heights of around 100 feet.

Several evacuees were still out of their homes Friday.
