Saskatoon’s newest bridge is one step closer to getting a new name. City council unanimously approved a motion Monday afternoon to rename the Circle Drive South Bridge after the legendary Gordie Howe.

Howe, who passed away on June 10th, is a Saskatchewan native and considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time.

Ward 1 city councillor Darren Hill put the motion forward during Monday’s city council meeting.

"He was about community," Hill said. "When I bumped into him at the airport about seven years ago, and told him I was a city councillor, he was very quick to tell me that he loves this city, he loves coming back to this city."

Hill says it was a mistake when council didn’t name the bridge before it opened in the summer of 2013.

The official renaming won’t take place until the city has approval from Howe’s family.
