LLOYDMINSTER, ALTA. -- A man is dead and two police officers were taken to hospital after Mounties tried to stop a stolen car in a city that straddles the Saskatchewan-Alberta boundary.

RCMP say they received a call about a stolen vehicle in the Lloydminster area on Sunday and shots were fired as they were trying to stop it.

The vehicle took off and was spotted an hour later in Lloydminster.

Shots were fired again and the driver was killed, while a female passenger was not hurt and was arrested.

RCMP did not explain how the officers were hurt, but said their injuries are not life-threatening.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates deaths or injuries involving police, has been called in to investigate.
