Three University of Regina Rams and two University of Saskatchewan Huskie heard their names called this afternoon for the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft.
Regina Rams defensive lineman, Stefan Charles was selected 10th overall by the Edmonton Eskimos. In five years with the Rams, Charles recorded 50 tackles along with 9 quarterback sacks which places him fourth in the school’s all-time sacks list.
Rams offensive lineman, Brett Jones was selected 16th overall by the Calgary Stampeders. The fourth year Ram has racked up many awards in his tenure including the 2012 Canada West Outstanding Lineman, and was named a CIS First-Team All-Canadian for the last two seasons.
Also from the Rams, offensive lineman Christopher Mercer was taken 26th overall by the Edmonton Eskimos. The Saskatoon native was selected as a second-team All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star for the 2012 season.
The 28th overall pick saw the first Saskatchewan Huskie called when wide receiver Charlie Power was selected by Stampeders. Power caught 18 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Huskies.
Regina linebacker and Saskatoon native Jorgen Hus heard his name called as the 31st overall selection by the Eskimos. Hus will now have to decide where to play after signing with the St. Louis Rams last week.
The last Saskatchewan player to hear his name was Huskies defensive lineman Levi Steinhauer. The native of Moose Jaw will get to be close to home as the Saskatchewan Roughriders picked him 40th overall.
Training camps across the CFL open at the beginning of June.
