A former NHL player’s son has been identified as the suspect in a fatal shooting on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, while a heavy equipment operator has been identified as the victim.
A band councillor confirmed to CTV News Chucky Sasakamoose, the son of Fred Sasakamoose, was the man RCMP were looking for following the shooting. Friends said the victim was Wayne Teed.
Mounties are not releasing names, but state the incident began Tuesday morning and did not come to an end until about 5 p.m. when officers located the suspect.
Officers were first called at about 10 a.m. A person was firing a gun near the First Nation’s health centre.
A 56-year-old man was shot and killed during the incident, and Mounties spent hours searching for the suspect.
Police from four nearby RCMP detachments, as well as canine teams and major crimes investigators, were brought in to search for the shooter. Residents were asked to stay inside their homes while the search was conducted.
RCMP located a 59-year-old man, believed to be responsible for the shooting, at about 5 p.m.
While they were on scene, the suspect suffered a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital in Shellbrook, where he was pronounced dead.
According to police, officers did not fire their weapon at the scene.
The RCMP is now asking the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct an independent investigation into the death of the suspect.
