Tens of thousands of young people are staying silent today to raise awareness for children’s rights, including students from Saskatoon.

Shoppers at Centre Mall were greeted by approximately 75 students from Roland Michener School as they marched silently with posters to educate people about child labour and access to education problems.

The students, from grades 5 to grade 8, as well as teachers remained silent for the entire event; some even had tape over their mouths.

We Are Silent is an initiative put on by Free the Children that began in 2004.

According to Free the Children, 215 million children are forced into child labour and denied the opportunity to get an education. Another billion children across the globe go without essentials like water, food, and health care.

The We are Silent campaign is one of Free the Children’s largest campaigns. Participants stay silent for 24 hours to raise awareness and funds for children “without a voice”.
