An elaborate welcome for the Memorial Cup to Saskatoon marked the official kickoff to the 10-day junior hockey championship.

The tournament offers more than just hockey – the city will host cabarets, kids games, and a hockey call of fame.

This is the second time in the cup’s history it’s been in held the Bridge City. It was last held in Saskatoon in 1989 shortly after the Credit Union Centre opened. The Blades made it through to the final game, but weren’t able to claim the title.

The cup had a military welcome fit for it’s history. Initially created to honour fallen soldiers in World War I, the memorial cup was re-dedicated to include all soldiers in 2010.

After a month and a half off the ice, the Blades will kick off the tournament Friday night against London.
