A fire at a Melfort seniors' home sent eight people to hospital early Thursday morning.

Seven people were treated at Melfort Union Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries while an 82-year-old resident suffered burns and smoke inhalation.

RCMP said in a media release the fire started in the 82-year-old’s suite. The cause is still under investigation.

The Melfort Fire Department was able to contain the blaze to just one suite in the multi-unit complex. The four-story building was evacuated as crews fought the fire.

Residents were moved to a community facility until temporary accommodations were arranged. RCMP said they’re not yet sure when residents will be allowed to return to their suites.

The office of the provincial fire commissioner attended the scene.
