Fire safety officials are reminding Saskatchewan residents to ensure their homes are well-protected against fires this holiday season.

Although the danger may be the last thing on your mind during the festivities, some fire safety tips can be followed to make sure the holidays are safe for everyone.

  • If purchasing a real Christmas tree, choose one with fresh needles and a stump sticky with resin. Make sure the stump of the tree stays immersed in water, and fill up the tree stand with water daily.
  • Make sure your tree doesn't block an escape route from your house, and place it away from a television, fire place, or heat register.
  • Use outdoor lights outdoors, and indoor lights indoors. The bulbs are made with different purposes, and bringing outdoor light inside means the bulbs can burn too hot. Always unplug lights before leaving the house or going to sleep.
  • Check all light cords and extension cords before use.
