Hundreds of hectares continue to burn as wildfires spread through northern Saskatchewan.

“We just had to grab anything, even dirty clothes. That’s how fast we had to get ready and get out of there,” said Janet Forest, one of over 1,000 people forced from their homes because of the fires.

The communities of Sikichew Lake and Clam Lake Bridge were evacuated Saturday, and voluntary evacuation notices have since been issued for several other communities, including La Ronge, Air Ronge and Hall Lake.

The Red Cross, with help from the province, is caring for 700 people who have since been moved to Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

“We’re providing food. We’re providing shelter. We’re providing clothing if required,” said Joanne McClenaghan, a Red Cross shelter manager.

Saskatoon’s health region has brought its health bus to the Henk Ruys Soccer Centre to assist the over 400 people staying at the centre.

The fire has so far destroyed one home and seven cabins. Fire crews are still working to contain the fires.
