Saskatchewan Party MLA Darryl Hickie will not seek re-election in the next provincial election.

Hickie and Premier Brad Wall made the announcement Tuesday in Regina.

"I feel honoured and humbled to have been elected to represent the people of Prince Albert Carlton as their voice in the Legislature," Hickie said.

Hickie was elected as the Prince Albert Carlton MLA in 2007 and re-elected in 2011.

He served as Minister for Corrections, Public Safety and Policing from 2007 to 2009 and as Minister of Municipal Affairs from 2010 to 2012.

The former police officer was born in Winnipeg and moved to Prince Albert in 1975. He worked as a correctional officer and parole officer at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and as a constable on the Prince Albert police’s forensic identification unit before he was elected.

He said Tuesday he would be returning to the police service.

“I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Prince Albert by returning to my previous career as a police officer."

The next provincial election is expected to be held April 2016.
