A former Saskatoon teacher is facing a charge of sexual exploitation in an alleged encounter with a one-time student.

Police say a 30-year-old woman alleges she was sexually assaulted starting in October 2000 when she was a 16-year-old student at a school where the accused taught.

Erin McGonigle, 38, was charged following an investigation by the sex crimes and child abuse unit.

Saskatoon Public Schools says it terminated McGonigle's employment last November after an investigation by its human resources department.

The school division had suspended McGonigle in September when it became aware of a complaint from a former student.
