A proposal that would prohibit dogs from riding in the bed of pickup trucks is under review by City of Saskatoon administration.

The city's animal control committee is worried about the safety of dogs and motorists when dogs are placed in the back of truck beds due to the potential for the animal to either jump out or be ejected from the vehicle.

"An animal potentially thrown from a vehicle definitely warrants additional consideration,” said Coun. Zach Jeffries.

“This may be common practice in some parts of rural Saskatchewan, and that’s perfectly understandable and fine, but we understand it’s at least worth consideration how we regulate that in Saskatoon.”

The committee is proposing penalties similar to Calgary where pet owners can be fined up to $500. A report will be brought to the administration and finance committee in June.
