A Saskatoon assault case has been settled through mediation. A police officer was charged with assaulting a hockey referee during a game last March.

It happened at Canlan Ice Sports Arena just south of the city. Patrol sergeant Joe Jorgenson, with the Saskatoon Police Service, was charged with assault after he got in an altercation with the referee during a rec hockey game.

After several months of mediation between Jorgenson and the referee, the matter has been settled out of court. Details have not been made public.

Eric Olauson, with the Saskatoon Recreational Referees Association, wants people to realize the association takes these incidents seriously.

"If there is a message it's that assault is assault no matter where it happens, no matter what you're doing. It is assault and there are consequences to your actions."

The Saskatoon Police Service says Jorgenson will not face any disciplinary action within the police service as the incident happened off duty, and there are no longer criminal charges involved.
