Jason Leuschen is one step closer to reaching his goal of going to space.

The University of Saskatchewan engineering graduate is one of 17 finalists in the Canadian Space Agency vying to be Canada’s newest astronaut.

Leuschen, who’s from Bruno, Sask., is a pilot with the Canadian Armed Forces. He said he’s dreamed of becoming an astronaut since he was 11 years old, when he met Marc Garneau, the first Canadian in space.

The process to find Canada’s latest astronaut started last summer with nearly 4,000 applicants.

Applicants have been whittled down through physical, mental, medical and stimulation tests. The final two candidates will be chosen in June and be recruited to NASA in Houston.
