A 19-year-old man is in custody after a girl was stabbed at a high school in Shellbrook, Sask.

RCMP say the stabbing occurred while the girl was leaving a classroom at W.P. Sandin School shortly before noon Friday.

The victim, who police say is under 18, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The school initiated a “hold and secure” protocol, in which exterior doors are locked and monitored but classes continue.

Officers arrested a 19-year-old male suspect at a home in the community a short time later, but there’s no word on any charges.

Mounties say the suspect and the victim are both students at the school. Police haven’t confirmed the type of weapon that was involved.

Shellbrook is located about 45 kilometres west of Prince Albert.
